Green Skies Ahead: India Accelerates Sustainability in Aviation with Innovative Partnerships
Exciting news in the aviation industry! Airbus has joined hands with the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP) to propel sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) innovation in India.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel, including a variant developed by CSIR-IIP, is identified as the most impactful measure for decarbonizing the aviation industry. It involves utilizing a new technology pathway called HEFA (Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids) and locally sourced feedstocks.
India holds the potential to become a prominent SAF production hub, leveraging abundant feedstocks, local talent, and technological proficiency.
As part of the collaboration, CSIR-IIP will delve into studying fuel properties under the new pathway and assess their impact on aircraft systems and the environment. On the other hand, Airbus will provide invaluable guidance on the evaluation process of these new fuels, sharing insights into fuel testing and aircraft systems.
Currently, all Airbus aircraft are certified to operate using a 50% SAF blend. However, Airbus aims for 100% SAF compatibility for its aircraft by 2030, highlighting the significance of the collaboration with CSIR-IIP.
